Spiritual Teachings of Nahj al-Balaghah

Inimitable Moral Teaching:
Moral and spiritual teachings constitute the greater part of the Nahj al-balaghah making up almost half of the book. More than anything else the fame of the Nahj al-balaghah is due to the sermons, exhortations, and aphorisms on ethical and moral subjects.
Aside from the moral teachings of the Quran and a number of the sermons and sayings of the Holy Prophet ('s), which are to be considered the source and antecedent of the Nahj al-balaghah, the teachings of the Nahj al-balaghah are without a match in the Arabic and Persian languages. For more than a thousand years these sermons have played an influential role serving as a matchless source of inspiration, and yet retained their original power to quicken the heart, to sublimate emotions, and to bring tears to the eyes. It seems that as long as there remains any trace of humanity in the world, these sermons shall continue to exercise their original power and influence.

A Comparison:
The literature of Arabic and Persian is replete with works containing spiritual and moral teachings of highest sublimity and elegance though mainly in the form of poetry. There is, for example, the famous qasidah by Abu al-Fath al-Busti (360-400/971-1010), which begins with the verse:
Worldly profit and achievement is loss,
And the gain unmarked by the seal of pure goodness.
There is also the elegiacal qasidah of Abu al-Hasan al-Tihami, which he wrote on the early death of his youthful son. It begins with these lines:
The law of fate governs the destiny of creation,
And this world is not a place to settle in.
Every one of these works is an everlasting masterpiece of its kind and shines like a star on the horizons of the Arabic literature of Islamic era, never to lose its freshness and charm.
In Persian, the Gulistan and the Bustan of Sa'di and his qasaid serve as an unusually attractive and effective means of moral advice and are masterpieces of their own kind. To give some examples, there are those famous verses of the Gulistan which start with the verse:
Every breath is a fraction of life gone,
And when I see, not much has remained of it.
Or in his qasa'id where he says:
O people, the world is not a place for leisure and repose;
To the wise man, the world is not worth the effort of acquiring it.
Or at another place where he says:
The world on water and life on wind do rest;
Salutes to the brave who do not tie their hearts to them.
And where he says:
Time and fortune are subject to endless change;
The wise man doesn't attach his heart to the world.
Sa'di's Bustan is full of profound and glowing spiritual advices, and, perhaps, is at its best in the ninth chapter on "Penitence and the Right Way". The same is true of some portions of the Mathnawi of Rumi and works of all other Persian poets, from whom we shall not further quote any examples.
In Islamic literature, including the Arabic and the Persian, there exist excellent examples of spiritual counsels and aphorisms. This Islamic literary genre is not confined to these two languages, but is also found in Turkish, Urdu, and other languages, and a characteristic spirit pervades all of them. Anyone familiar with the Holy Quran, the sayings of the Holy Prophet ('s), Amir al-Mu'minin 'Ali ('a), the other Imams ('a), and Muslim saints of the first rank, can observe a characteristic spirit pervading all Persian literature containing spiritual counsel, which represents the spirit of Islam embodied in the Persian language and embellished with its charm and sweetness.
If an expert or a group of experts in Arabic and Persian literature acquainted with the works in all other languages that reflect the spirit of Islam, were to collect the masterpieces in the field of spiritual counsel, the extraordinary richness and maturity of the Islamic culture in lhis field will be revealed.
It is strange that so far as the works on spiritual counsel are concerned the Persian genius has mostly expressed itself in poetry; there is no such work of eminence in prose. All that exists of it in prose is in the form of short sayings, like the prose writings of the Gulistan-a part of which consists of spiritual counsels and is in itself a masterpiece-or the sayings ascribed to Khwajah 'Abd Allah al-'Ansari.
Of course, my own knowledge is inadequate, but as far as I know there does not exist in Persian prose any remarkable work, except for short sayings-not even a passage which is long enough to be counted as a short discourse, especially a discourse which was originally delivered extempore and later collected and recorded in writing.
There are discourses which have been related from Rumi or Sa'di, meant as oral moral advice to their followers; they also by no means possess the brilliance and charm of the poetic works of those masters, and definitely are not worth considering for a comparison with the discourses of the Nahj al-balaghah.
The same can be said about the writings which have reached us in the form of a treatise or letter, such as the Nasihat al-muluk by Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali, the Taziyaneh-ye suluk by Ahmad al-Ghazali, the latter being an elaborate epistle addressed to his follower and pupil 'Ayn al-Qudat al-Hamadan

To the Qadhi of Kufa


Shurayh bin Haarith had been holding an important post during the previous regimes. Imam Ali (a) had also appointed him as a Qadhi (Chief Judge) of Kufa. It was brought to the notice of Imam Ali (a) that he had purchased a house for himself in the city (rather a costly and expensive house, perhaps more expensive and luxurious than his status demanded and that too rather at a cheaper price).
Imam Ali (a) called him and asked of him: "I am given to understand that you have purchased this house for eighty dinars and a sales deed has also been completed regularizing it with signatures of witnesses".
Shurayh replied, "O Amir al-Mu'minin this is a fact". Hearing this Imam Ali (a) felt annoyed and said to him: "Shurayh be warned that a thing (death) will come to you; it will not take any notice of this sales deed nor will it accept the testimony of the witnesses but it will take you out of this house alone and unattended and will drag you to your grave.
And before such a thing happens, you must think well over the fact whether you have purchased this house with the money which does not belong to you but to somebody else and whether the purchase price was acquired with foul means or it was an ill-gotten wealth, which met its cost, if it was so, then remember that you will part (through death) with this house and in the bargain you will lose your place in Paradise.
If you had come to me prior to this transaction I would have drafted such a sales deed for you that you would not have cared to purchase this property even for a dirham. You know what the transfer deed would have been like, it would have been phrased in the following words:
A humble and powerless creature has purchased this house from another mortal being, its boundaries are as follows: On one side it is bounded by calamities and disasters, on the other side with disappointments and sorrows, on the third side its borders are covered with inordinate and excessive desires ending in failures and on the fourth side it adjoins the misleading and captivating allurements of Satan, and the door of this house opens towards this fourth side.
A man leading his life under the merciless grip of intemperate and disorderly desires has purchased this house from another person who is being relentlessly pursued by death. And for the purchase price he has bargained the glory of an honourably contented and respectable way of living against the detestable life of submitting to every form of humiliation for profits and pleasures. The buyer had not realized what sorrows and degradations he was purchasing and what he was paying in by way of the cost.
His delivery now lies in the hands of One Who throws the bodies of kings into dust and overthrows their empires, Who ends the lives of despots and Who has brought to an end the dominions of Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome and Himyars, kings of Yemen, Who had destroyed the wealth, power and glory of all those individuals who had amassed wealth, gathered property, built very strong and durable houses, furnished them with the choicest and most costly furniture and surrounded them with beautiful gardens. Those people were imagining that they and their descendants will enjoy the fruits of their labours, though in reality everyone of the house so built or the article so collected will have to be accounted for on the Day of Judgement, the day when people will be rewarded or punished according to their deeds, the day on which evil doers will suffer for their vicious and wicked ways. Your mind will corroborate and confirm this if it is kept free from intemperate ambitions, from lust for alluring things, from sensuality and from vicious affections and attachments.

qor'an» Endless way


In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful. Alif. Lam. Ra These 

are verses of the wise Scripture.

Is it a wonder for mankind that We have 

inspired a man among them, saying : Warn mankind and bring unto those who believe the good tidings that they have a sure footing with their Lord? The disbelievers say : Lo! this is a mere wizard.

Lo! your Lord is Allah Who created the 

heavens and the earth in six days, then He 

established Himself upon the Throne, directing all things. 

There is no intercessor (with Him) save after His permission.

That is Allah, your Lord, so worship Him. Oh, will ye not remind?

Unto Him is the return of all of you; it is a promise of Allah in truth. 

Lo! He produceth creation, then reproduceth it, that He may reward those who believe and do good works with equity; while, as for those who disbelieve, theirs will be a boiling drink and painful doom because they disbelieved.

He it is who appointed the sun a splendor and the moon a light, 

and measured for her stages,

that ye might know the number of the years, and the reckoning. 

Allah created not (all) that save in truth. He detaileth the revelations for people who have knowledge.

Lo! in the difference of day and night and all 

that Allah hath created in the heavens and the earth 

are portents, verily, for folk who ward off (evil).

Lo! those who expect not the meeting with Us 

but desire the life of the world and feel secure therein,

and those who are neglectful of Our revelations,

Their home will be the Fire because of what they used to earn.

Lo! those who believe and do good works, their Lord guideth 

them by their faith. Rivers will] flow beneath them in the Gardens of Delight,

Their prayer therein will be: Glory be to Thee, O Allah! 

and their greeting therein will be : Peace. 

And the conclusion of their prayer will be : Praise be to Allah,

Lord of the Worlds!

If Allah were to hasten on for men the ill 

(that they have earned ) as they would hasten on the good, 

their respite would already have expired. 

But We suffer those who look not 

for the meeting with Us to wander blindly on in their contumacy.

And if misfortune touch a man he crieth unto Us,

(while reclining) on his side, 

or sitting or standing, but when We have relieved 

him of the misfortune he goeth his way as though he had not cried unto Us 

because of a misfortune that afflicted him. Thus is what they do made (seeming) fair unto the prodigal.

We destroyed the generations before

you when they did wrong; and their messengers

(from Allah) came unto them with clear proofs (of His Sovereignty) but they would not believe. Thus do We reward the guilty folk:

Then We appointed you viceroys in the 

earth after them, that We might see how ye behave.

And when Our clear revelations are recited 

unto them they who look not for the meeting 

with Us say: Bring a Lecture other than this, or change it. 

Say (O Muhammad): It is not for me to change it of my own accord.

I only follow that which is inspired in me.

Lo! If I disobey my Lord I fear the retribution of an awful Day.

Say: If Allah had so willed I should not have 

recited it to you nor would He have made it known to you. I dwelt among you a whole lifetime before it (came to me). Have ye then no sense?

Who doeth greater wrong than he who 

inventeth a lie concerning Allah and denieth His revelations? 

Lo! the guilty never are successful.

 

They worship beside Allah that which neither hurteth them nor 

profiteth them, and they say: These are our intercessors with Allah.

Say: Would ye inform Allah of (something) that He knoweth

not in the heavens or in the earth? Praised be He and high 

exalted above all that ye associate (with Him)!

 

Mankind were but one community; 

then they differed;

and had it not been for a word that had 

already gone forth from thy Lord it had been judged between 

them in respect of that wherein they differ.

And they will say: If only a portent were sent down upon him from his Lord! Then say (O Muhammad): The Unseen belongeth to Allah. 

So wait! Lo, I am waiting with you.

And when We cause mankind to taste of mercy after some adversity which had afflicted them, behold! they have some plot 

against Our revelations. Say : Allah is more swift in plotting. Lo! Our messengers write down that which ye plot.

He it is Who maketh you to go on the land and the sea till, when ye are in the ships and they sail with them with a fair breeze and they are glad therein, a storm wind reacheth them and the wave cometh unto them from every side and they deem that they are overwhelmed therein; 

(then) they cry unto Allah, making their faith pure for Him only; If Thou deliver us from this, we truly will be of the thankful.

Yet when He hath delivered them, behold!

they rebel in the earth wrongfully. O mankind! Your rebellion is only against yourselves. (Ye have) enjoyment of the life of the world; then unto Us is your return and We shall proclaim unto you what ye used to do.

The similitude of the life of the world is 

only as water which We send down from the sky, then the earth's growth of that which men and cattle eat mingleth with it till, when the earth hath taken on her ornaments and is embellished, and her people deem that they are masters of her, Our commandment cometh by night or by day and we make it as reaped corn as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do We expound the revelations for people who reflect.

And Allah summoneth to the abode of peace, and leadeth whom He will to a straight path.

And the moon when she followeth him,

And the day when it revealeth him,

And the night when it enshroudeth him,

And the heaven and Him who built it,

And the earth and Him who spread it,

And a soul and Him who perfected it

And inspired it (with conscience of) what is wrong for it and (what is) right for it.

He is indeed successful who causeth it to grow,

And he is indeed a failure who stunteth it.

(The tribe of) Thamud denied (the truth) in their rebellious pride.
